Geography

Studying geography is so important for children, regardless of their age or stage of learning. Geography helps them to make sense of the world around them and fires their curiosity in places and people. It engages pupils in their world, often spurring them into action, and geography is fun!

Teaching and Learning in Geography

Curriculum planning ensures that pupils build upon their prior knowledge. Links are made across subjects to enable cohesion across the whole curriculum.

In early years pupils begin to understand their locality, the wider world, phenomena, such as the weather and seasons. To find out more about how our youngest children learn about Geography please visit the Early Years Foundation Stage section of our website here.

Pupils with special educational needs or disabilities are fully included geography provision. Teachers and other adults support these pupils so that they can access the same content.

At Overfields Primary School we follow the National Curriculum for Geography. We have developed a progression of Geographical skills in throughout school, showing how each year group builds upon existing learning and develops further skills specific for their year group.

Fieldwork is vital to geographical practice, educational visits are planned to enable pupils to make observations, collect data to analyse and present their findings in a range of human and physical environments. The local area is also utilised.

Year 1 studying their local environment

Through the Geography curriculum we explore our planet and how to look after it – our Eco Council are involved in initiatives and take direct action to protect the environment and help to promote this awareness. Overfields has achieved the Woodlands Trust Gold award and we are a double Green Flag Eco School holder. We are currently working towards our third Green Flag.
